“Rank higher on Google” sounds like one switch. It is a chain. If the site is not indexed, titles say nothing, or there is no Business Profile, no blog will save you.
The order is: discoverable, then relevant, then trusted, then links. Starting with backlinks while Google does not know the homepage wastes months.
Step 1: Google has to know you
Add the domain in Search Console, verify, submit the sitemap, and request indexing for home, services and contact. Without this step you do not exist in results.
Then connect GA4 so you can see which queries actually create contact requests.
Step 2: keywords where someone buys
“AI” is too broad. “Keep my SMB website updated”, “SEO for a small company”, “write product copy” are phrases from people with a problem and a budget.
Each service needs one page that answers that phrase. Blogs support those pages. They do not replace them.
Step 3: local is faster than national
A national #1 on “AI automation” is unrealistic for a young brand. A strong local or niche query is realistic if your Business Profile, chamber listing and name/address/phone are identical everywhere.
Step 4: content with proof
Publish monthly answers to real buyer questions. Not “10 AI trends”. That is how SMBs win work from search.
